Emberville Gameplay: How the Dungeon Feeds the Town
Emberville is half dungeon crawler, half town builder, and both halves feed one progress bar. What you do in the Vitromotus, and why gathering matters.

Emberville is two things stitched together: a dungeon crawl and a town rebuild.
You fight, mine, chop and rescue people down in the dungeon. Back in town, you use the trades those survivors teach you to put broken Emberville back together. The more you rebuild, the more systems you unlock.
The studio put it bluntly: “everything you do should matter. You don’t need to fight just to progress.” So farming without fighting, or grinding dungeons while ignoring the town, is not the whole game.
Three places, three jobs
| Place | What it’s for | What the studio confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| The Vitromotus | The main dungeon, and where the story happens | Procedurally generated, split into 8 biomes, reshuffled every new game |
| Emberville | Your home base | Rebuild more, unlock more. The town tells its own story over time |
| The Creative Area | Your private space | Build a home, farm, decorate, craft. Every life-skill tool lives here |
So rebuilding isn’t decoration. It’s also an unlock machine.
What your first couple of hours look like
This comes from IGN’s hands-on (September 11, 2026) and from creators who got access to the Prologue build. It is the Prologue version, so the full release will differ.
- Character creation. Hairstyles, beards, facial features and colours are all adjustable. Creator Bitz immediately gave himself a moustache and goggles.
- You wake up in the dark. Work out what you can chop, what you can pick up, and which door opens. IGN’s writer was killed by a hooded figure within minutes — and then popped back into existence, because prisoners in the Vitromotus don’t stay dead.
- Gather as you explore. Ore, trees and plants are all harvestable. Enemies drop crafting components.
- Cook at every campfire. Raw meat becomes food with better healing. It is the most practical trick in the Prologue.
- Fight the first boss. The Prologue ends with the Spider Matriarch, whose health bar is visible in the official screenshots.
- Reach Emberville. That’s where the Prologue stops. The town-building systems weren’t in that build.
You have four progression tracks
Not one. The studio confirmed four running at once:
- Character XP. Classic levels from kills and quests. It decides when inheritance slots open.
- Weapon levels. Every weapon category levels on its own. Use a sword enough and sword skills unlock.
- Classes. Not chosen at creation. You unlock them by hitting milestones with a weapon or armour type, then switch freely.
- Life skills. Mining, woodcutting, herborism, fishing, plus weaponsmithing, armoursmithing, alchemy, cooking, carpentry, jewelcrafting and tailoring.
Combat itself runs on two attack buttons. Chain a main and an alternate attack in the right order and you land a heavier finisher. IGN’s take: satisfying against small groups and bosses, but it falls apart into frantic clicking when you’re swarmed. That’s a feel report, not a verdict on the system.
How to tell what’s live and what isn’t
The studio’s rule, straight from their own Q&A: “we’d rather just do it right, or not at all.”
In the Prologue that rule shows up as a label. Systems that aren’t finished are marked Coming Soon on screen. In IGN’s build, the gathering and crafting mastery trees were exactly that.
So if you don’t see a system in a demo, don’t assume it’s cut. Check for a Coming Soon tag, or look for the studio announcement.
Death, weather and seasons
- Dying doesn’t stick. That’s part of the setting. Prisoners in the Vitromotus are revived by an energy called kymia. You respawn instead of reloading. The studio hasn’t explained the penalties.
- Weather is confirmed.
- Seasons are explicitly still being designed. Whether they affect farming is “to be defined”.
